How to Build the Perfect Martial Arts Studio at Home

Due to social distancing orders, many martial arts classes have been canceled. Fortunately, your kids can still get active and practice their martial arts training from home! The coronavirus lockdown is a great opportunity to build a home martial arts studio where you and your kids can train together. If you want to help your kids keep up their training at home, keep reading!

Choosing a Martial Arts Style

Are your kids new to martial arts? Help them pick a martial art style so you can get them started with the right training setup and gear.

  • There is no single best martial arts form for kids, so learn about each style and help your kids pick one that fits best with their goals.

  • If your kids are interested in self-defense, consider jiu jitsu, taekwondo, or krav maga.

  • Boxing isn’t as unsafe as many parents think, and it can even be a great activity to boost your kids’ self-confidence!

  • Whatever martial art form they choose, be supportive of your children’s practice and avoid pushing them to do anything they don’t enjoy.

Making Room for Your Studio

An at-home martial arts studio needs a room of its own. You don’t want your kids tripping over furniture or breaking valuable décor during their training sessions!

  • No spare bedroom? Consider converting your basement or garage into a rec room.

  • If you want to turn your garage into a functional martial arts studio, you might have to make some renovations. Insulate the walls, add windows, and install some new flooring.

  • A multi-purpose rec room could be considered a valuable home feature when it comes time to sell, so keep this in mind when building your studio.

Picking the Right Gear

Martial arts gear is an essential component of any training program. Even when your kids are practicing at home, it’s important that they have the gear they need to train effectively.

  • Different martial arts require different gear, but almost any martial arts studio can benefit from shock-absorbing mats to help protect against falls.

  • One of the most important gear requirements for boxing is a good pair of gloves.

  • If your kids do karate or taekwondo, they will need punching bags and training dummies to practice traditional strikes.

  • Last but not least, make sure your kids have the right padding and guards to protect their head, chest, feet, hands, and elbows.

Practicing martial arts is a great way for your kids to burn off some energy during the coronavirus lockdown. Help your kids maintain their skills — or even try martial arts for the first time — by setting up a home studio. You might just learn some martial arts moves yourself!
